SMSes, e-mails, phone calls that irritate people!

IF you are in business today, you must get used to one important thing: people do not respond to communication!

Their inboxes are full. Therefore, your e-mails bounce. You send it with the option that lets you know that the mail is delivered and read. You do not get either of those responses.

They do not respond to Short Messaging Service (SMS) messages. They do not answer calls on the landline. Mobiles are invariably out of range.

It is easy for us to give up on this person because s/he is just not reachable. You can do that if this person is an exception. You cannot afford to do that if most people respond (or do not respond), this way.

I said to myself the onus is on me to get their response. They have the choice not to respond, therefore they have not responded. I have been in the direct response business for many years. I have studied what makes people respond to messages.

Take e-mails, for instance. I delete a whole bunch of e-mails ruthlessly because I do not recognise the name (strangers) and cannot make sense out of the subject line. I do the same with SMS. I suspect that is what everyone would be doing with my messages.

The logic: if it is important, that person will get to me somehow. It also saves me a lot of time and protects my computer from viruses.

Therefore, the barriers are:

1. Am I interesting, relevant, useful or boring?
2. Is my subject line compelling, intriguing?
3. Is my message simple, short and easy to understand?
4. Do they know, understand what I want them to do?
5. Have I made it easy for them to do it?

Therefore, I worry a lot about how my message is going to be received. I have had many conversations, and they have told me about e-mails and SMSes that irritate them.
