DO you find yourself slogging overtime at work every other day? Could it be because you are not delegating enough to others?
Delegation is a smart technique used by smart managers. They pass on work to team members or subordinates. No, it is not a ploy to shirk work!
"Delegating tasks and responsibility is a way to manage your time more effectively. The main reason: people delegate to lessen their workload. This lets them focus on other tasks and responsibilities," says Harish Srivastava, Manager, Bharti Televentures.
Do you find yourself saying one or all of these?
~ "I can do the task better myself."
~ "He is not qualified to do it."
~ "I don't have time to teach others how to do it."
~ "She messed up last time, so I won't assign her any more work."
Then you are guilty of not delegating your work!
"Most people want to learn and take on added responsibilities. The short term investment in delegation will pay off in the long run," says Srivastava.
One way to be effective is to delegate tasks that are not part of your core competency. "For example, web site design, travel arrangements, accounting, product deliveries, hardware and software help, legal issues and HR functions such as recruitment.
Routine activities such as data entry, phone inquiries, preparation of letters or reports can also be delegated. If necessary, you may even have to delegate to people outside your company," reveals
Srivastava.
